Honey–Lemon Warm Drink for Cough
European and American folk home remedy
Evidence: Moderate — Cochrane review: honey probably relieves acute cough in children better than placebo or no treatment

Illustration: Lemons (Citrus limon), whole and halved
What it is and what it is used for
Warm water with honey and lemon juice, sipped for cough, sore throat, and cold comfort. A Cochrane review of 6 RCTs (899 children aged 1–18) concluded honey probably relieves cough symptoms better than no treatment, diphenhydramine, or placebo. Lemon's role is comfort, hydration, and vitamin C — no trials support 'immune-boosting' cure claims for lemon itself.
Safety and disclaimers
- NEVER give honey to infants under 12 months (infant botulism).
- Honey is sugar — caution with diabetes.
- The drink soothes; it does not treat bronchitis, asthma, or pneumonia.
Recipe
Ingredients:
- Juice of 1/2–1 lemon (Citrus limon)
- 1–2 tablespoons honey
- 250 ml (about 1 cup) warm — not hot — water
- Optional: fresh ginger slices, thyme, cloves, cinnamon
Preparation:
- Stir the honey into warm water until dissolved.
- Add lemon juice (and any optional simmered herbs — simmer ginger, lemon peel, thyme, cloves, and cinnamon 8–10 minutes first, then stir in honey off the heat).
Dosage / directions: Sip as needed for cough and throat comfort. Trials were mostly single-night treatments.
Folk history
The honey–lemon cup is the remedy nearly every grandmother in Europe and America reached for at the first cough — no prescription, no pharmacy, just the pantry. It took until 2018 for a Cochrane review to confirm what those grandmothers knew: for a child's nighttime cough, honey genuinely helps.
