Rhodiola for Stress-Related Fatigue

Siberian and Scandinavian folk medicine — 'golden root' for fatigue and cold endurance

Evidence: Moderate but mixed — some RCTs show reduced mental fatigue under stress; a 2023 meta-analysis (26 RCTs) found small-to-moderate physical performance gains

What it is and what it is used for

Rhodiola root (Rhodiola rosea), the arctic 'golden root,' for stress-related fatigue and mental performance under strain. Trials are mixed but lean positive: a 28-day trial of standardized extract reduced stress-related fatigue; military cadets and night-duty physicians performed better cognitively under sleep deprivation; and a 2023 meta-analysis of 26 trials found small-to-moderate gains in endurance and antioxidant markers. One depression trial was negative. Most positive trials used the standardized extract SHR-5.

Recipe

Ingredients:

Preparation:

  1. Simmer gently 15–20 minutes and strain — the root is woody and needs a decoction.
  2. Alternatively, use a standardized extract (SHR-5 type: 3% rosavins, 1% salidroside) per label — the preparation most trials actually tested.

Dosage / directions: One cup in the morning. Trials typically ran 4 weeks.

Folk history

Siberian hunters chewed the golden root before long treks; Vikings reportedly used it for endurance; Soviet scientists studied it as an 'adaptogen' for soldiers, athletes, and cosmonauts. It is a true cold-climate plant — you will not find it on a casual walk, which is part of why the old knowledge stayed with northern peoples.
