Bracken Fern vs. Ostrich Fern Fiddleheads

BRACKEN (Pteridium) — carcinogenic compounds; not a food fern.

The tell: Ostrich fern fiddleheads: deep U-shaped groove inside the stem, brown papery scales, emerging in a crown cluster. Bracken: no groove, no papery scales, single fronds.

Rule: No U-groove, no papery scales — not a fiddlehead.
