Juniper Berries

Juniperus spp.

Illustration: Juniper (Juniperus spp.) blue waxy berry-cones

Identification: Evergreen shrub/tree with scale-like or awl-like foliage; dusty BLUE waxy berry-cones (actually tiny cones, not berries).

Dangerous look-alikes: Only blue-ripe berry-cones of common species (J. communis, J. monosperma, J. osteosperma). Avoid heavy or medicinal quantities — juniper oil irritates kidneys; avoid in pregnancy and kidney disease.

Edible parts: Ripe blue berry-cones (as seasoning).

Season and habitat: Fall–winter. Widespread across the West.

Preparation: Crush a few as seasoning for game, sauerkraut, gin-style infusions. A spice, not a snack — a little goes far.
