Mormon Tea

Ephedra viridis

Illustration: Mormon tea (Ephedra viridis) jointed green twigs

Identification: Desert shrub of jointed green photosynthetic twigs, nearly leafless; tiny cones. Looks like a bundle of green straws.

Dangerous look-alikes: Contains ephedrine-type alkaloids — the North American species are milder than Asian Ephedra sinica, but the same cautions apply: avoid with heart conditions, hypertension, or stimulant drugs. Not for regular heavy use.

Edible parts: Green jointed twigs.

Season and habitat: Year-round. Desert slopes, sandy washes.

Preparation: Simmer a handful of twigs 10–15 minutes — a stimulating, decongestant tea the pioneers drank when coffee ran out. Use lightly and occasionally.
