Saguaro Fruit

Carnegiea gigantea

Illustration: Saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) with red fruit

Identification: The giant columnar cactus of the Sonoran Desert; red fruit crowns the arm tips in early summer, splitting open to reveal sweet red pulp.

Dangerous look-alikes: No confusion possible. Harvest respectfully — saguaro is protected; in Arizona harvesting requires permits and tribal protocols (the Tohono O'odham harvest is ceremonial). Know the law before touching.

Edible parts: Ripe fruit.

Season and habitat: Early summer. Sonoran Desert.

Preparation: Traditionally knocked down with long poles, pulp eaten fresh or boiled into syrup. Check current regulations — this entry is cultural knowledge, not a harvest invitation.
